Before Crusty turned freestyle motocross into a crazy video spectacle, snowboarding taught action sports how to misbehave on camera, and Damian Sanders was one of its brightest, loudest stars. His backflips, punk-rock style and giant blond mohawk made him impossible to miss. Movies like Snowboarders in Exile and Creatures of Habit proved fans wanted more than athletic highlights. They wanted the music, crashes, jokes and personalities surrounding the athletes.

When Dana Nicholson and Jon Freeman brought that formula to dirt bikes, Damian became part of the bridge. He rode with Emig, Factory Phil, Metzger, Deegan and the Riverside crew, appeared in the early Crusty world and turned his Huntington Beach house into an unofficial soundstage.

After a knee injury ended his snowboarding career, Damian redirected that energy into Club Rubber. The Monday-night party became an action-sports headquarters where snowboarders, skaters, surfers, filmmakers, freestyle outlaws and factory racers finally occupied the same room. McGrath, Emig, Factory Phil and Denny Stephenson became regulars, and Crusty premiered on a 25-foot screen before the night erupted.

MOTO NINETIES reveals Damian and Club Rubber as the link between snowboard-video rebellion and motocross’s cultural takeover. The revolution didn’t begin in a factory paddock. It happened on VHS tapes, inside house parties and on a Monday-night dance floor in Orange County.
